The name is Sanskrit: \u003cem\u003eashva\u003c\/em\u003e, horse, and \u003cem\u003egandha\u003c\/em\u003e, smell, for the scent of the fresh root. In the classical system it is grouped with the \u003cem\u003erasayanas\u003c\/em\u003e, the plants taken as part of a daily routine rather than for a particular complaint. Today it is one of the most studied botanicals in the world, and one of the most sold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you have read about ashwagandha, you will have seen plenty of claims about what it does. In Great Britain a food supplement may only carry a health claim that has been authorised, and none has been authorised for ashwagandha. So we make none. The root is boiled, treated with solvents and concentrated until it reaches a percentage of one group of compounds, withanolides, that can be printed on the tin.
