Beyond the leaf

No. 01. The root.

Ashwagandha, Withania somnifera. A shrub in the nightshade family; the root is the part used. The Sanskrit name means “smell of the horse”, which is honest about the smell. It has been in Ayurveda’s texts for around two thousand years, and in India it is still taken the plain way: the dried root, ground, stirred into warm milk in the evening. Ours is that root, dried and milled, in a plain vegetarian capsule. One ingredient. 600 mg. 45 capsules.

We talk about the tea, not the promise.

Where it grew, how it is drunk there, and what is in the bag. In Assam this leaf is the morning cup. In Kashmir, kahwa is what you are handed when you come in from the cold. Chai is made for two, with milk, and argued over. That is the kind of thing we will tell you. Where the law lets us say what a plant does, we go no further than the words it allows, and we say may help, never cures. Where it does not, we say nothing.
