Ashwagandha Root Capsules

£9.99

45 capsules. 600 mg of ashwagandha root powder in each one. Nothing else in the capsule.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is the root of a small evergreen shrub grown across the drier parts of India. Ours is grown where the plant grows best, and every batch can be traced back to the farm. The root is dried, milled and put in a plain vegetarian capsule. No fillers, no binders, no flow agents, no flavourings.

What ashwagandha is known for

Ashwagandha is probably the best-known root in Ayurveda. It appears in the Charaka Samhita, written around two thousand years ago, and in texts older than that. The name is Sanskrit: ashva, horse, and gandha, smell, for the scent of the fresh root. In the classical system it is grouped with the rasayanas, the plants taken as part of a daily routine rather than for a particular complaint. Today it is one of the most studied botanicals in the world, and one of the most sold.

If you have read about ashwagandha, you will have seen plenty of claims about what it does. In Great Britain a food supplement may only carry a health claim that has been authorised, and none has been authorised for ashwagandha. So we make none. What we can tell you is what it is, where it is from, which part of the plant is in the jar, and how much. When you are comparing one ashwagandha with another, that is the information that matters.

Whole root, not an extract

Most ashwagandha on sale is an extract. The root is boiled, treated with solvents and concentrated until it reaches a percentage of one group of compounds, withanolides, that can be printed on the tin. Everything else in the root is left behind.

Ours is the root itself. Dried, milled, put in a capsule. Nothing concentrated, nothing standardised, nothing taken out. It is the form Ayurveda has used for as long as the plant has been written about, the powder called a churna, which is why it is taken by the gram rather than the milligram. Two capsules give you 1200 mg of the whole root.

Root only. A lot of cheap ashwagandha is leaf, or leaf and root mixed, because leaf is cheaper. Ayurveda has always used the root, and we can show the paperwork.

Questions people ask

Root or extract? Root. The whole dried root, milled. Not a concentrate. If you want a standardised extract, this is not it.

Which part of the plant? Root only. No leaf, no stem.

How much is in a capsule? 600 mg of root powder. Two capsules a day is 1200 mg. A traditional churna dose is larger, taken by the spoon, so two capsules is a modest daily amount in a convenient form.

What does it taste like? Earthy and bitter, which is why the fresh root was named after the smell of a horse. The capsule means you never taste it. If you prefer the traditional way, open the capsule and stir the powder into warm milk.

Is it vegan? Yes. The capsule shell is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a plant cellulose. No gelatine.

How long does a jar last? 45 capsules at two a day is about three weeks.

Where is it grown? India, in the region the plant grows best. Each batch is traceable to the farm. Batch number and best-before date are printed on every jar.

Why is it not cheaper? Root costs more than leaf, and a capsule with nothing added costs more to fill than one bulked out with rice flour. You are paying for the plant.

Why SoulistiQ

Everything we sell is the whole plant, from the place it grows best. Our teas are whole leaf, first flush, not the dust and fannings most teabags are filled with. Our ashwagandha is the whole root, milled, not an extract. Both come from India and both are traceable to source. Nothing is added that does not need to be there. And we only say what we can show you.
